Bookish presents

This Christmas, I prepared something special for my book club friends — bookmarks!

Bookmarks are always a big hit over at Flips Flipping Pages. We have bookmarks for every book discussion we have every month, and we like to give out bookmarks on special occasions, too — we all never seem to have enough of them!

Last year, at the 2009 FFP Christmas party, I set up a bookmark station with leather thongs and charms at our Christmas party so people could make their own bookmarks, but this year, I wanted to try out something different.

Protect-a-Book

I love book-related miscellany, so my friends and family are constantly on the lookout for bookish odds and ends for me. One day my siblings were out shopping and found me this nifty item from a clearance sale at Living Well (by Gourdo’s): Protect-a-Book, for only P35 (less than $1) each. I nearly forgot about it as I had buried the two packs underneath my bookfair loot, but I was clearing away some stuff tonight and tore into them with glee.

You ought to know (if you don’t already know) that I can’t read a “naked” book; I always compulsively cover a book in plastic before I can read it because I’m paranoid about spills and dents and that sort of thing. I also don’t dog-ear pages, so I’m forever running out of bookmarks as I tend to leave them  (or receipts, or tickets, or clothing labels, or anything that can fit flat) inside books. This compulsion makes this book thingy perfect for me: Protect-a-Book is a slip-on, clear plastic book cover that’s actually three products in one: book protector, bookmark, and magnifier.

Help me bookmarks

After the Ilustrado book launch, I was wandering around National Book Store with Flipper friend Ruby (who’s just moved her blog, by the way — I have to update my links!),  because I needed new paintbrushes for the project I’m currently working on and I found these nifty bookmarks!

As you all know, I’ve started collecting bookmarks (apt, don’t you think, since the title of my blog is ‘Bookmarked!’?), and I wanted these for my collection. These brightly colored bookmarks caught my eye — four to a set in purple, orange, yellow, and sky blue, not bad for P75 (less than $2), and I found it’s priced higher at the other bookstores (P100 at another bookstore and a whopping P275 at another!).

Another bunch of bookmarks!

A few months back I spotted a bunch of bookmarks at my favorite bargain bookstore, and practically bought out the stock. It also gave me a hankering to start collecting bookmarks, so now I’ve got a small collection going.  (Ironically, I just keep them in a fancy box and don’t actually use them as bookmarks because I know I’ll end up losing them!)

A couple of weeks ago, to my delight, the bargain bookstore had a fresh batch of Antioch bookmarks (the tasseled ones!) on hand, so I got a whole new bunch of them!

Here they are:

A bunch of bookmarks

mark

I never dog-ear pages — it destroys the fibers of the page — but I rarely go out of my way to buy bookmarks because I tend to forget them inside the book I’m reading. I have a small pile of freebie bookmarks, too — my sister collects for me from various counters in Singapore, I get a lot of bookmarks from the annual Manila International Book Fair, and a lot of BookMoochers send bookmarks too (aside from the official Bookmooch bookmarks)

When I don’t have a bookmark on hand, I can pretty much use anything thin enough to slip in between the pages — a tissue, an old receipt, clothing labels, or I commit the page number to memory, so I really don’t need to buy bookmarks.

Once I interviewed someone for an article I was writing, and I completely forgot that I used his business card as a bookmark! I’d turned my bag inside out, and rifled through my work desk looking for it because I needed to get back to the person I interviewed, and it wasn’t until a couple of nights later that I remembered I had tucked it inside the last book I finished. Hehe. After that, I’ve been careful not to use  business cards (or cheques) as bookmarks.

On a visit to one of my favorite book sale branches last week, I chanced upon some great bookmarks at really great prices, and I couldn’t resist getting some.  I ended up buying two books (for mooching, none for me) and a whole bag of assorted bookmarks!
