Reading something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue
Last week, I watched Repertory Philippines’ off-season production of Jekyll & Hyde at Onstage, Greenbelt 1.
The musical, of course, is based on the novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, in which the character Dr. Jekyll performs a scientific experiment on himself, leading to a drastic transformation in his personality.
Caught Repertory Philippines’ Seussical previews this weekend (thanks to Jeeves for the friday night, and my boss for Saturday morning) and I’m still singing along to the songs. Even my dog likes Seussical — he wags his tail every time I play the soundtrack.
I was fourteen when I first read Amy Tan’s Joy Luck Club, which was required reading for our Afro-Asian Literature class in sophomore year in high school . I remember reading the book, watching the film in class, and then writing a paper analyzing the tenets of Confucianism and Taoism as applied to the stories in the book.
I had to dig out my yellowed copy of Joy Luck Club last month, because our book club was scheduled to read it in time for a discussion that was synced with Repertory Philippines’ staging of the theatrical adaptation.
