The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh

My cousin Dianne told me I would love the Winnie the Pooh ride at Hong Kong Disneyland, although she said it was a bit complicated to explain, so I would just have to see for myself.

As much of a Disney junkie that I am, I’ve gone back and forth on the Disney Pooh. In high school, Winnie the Pooh was all the rage and I had a ton of Pooh stuff, but I outgrew the phase long before the oversized Winnie the Pooh my godmother gave me for Christmas lost its stuffing. Later on I rediscovered the original Winnie the Pooh, with the exquisite drawings by EH Shepard, and I’ve been a fan of classic Pooh ever since.

It was rainy when we got to Hong Kong Disneyland, so we decided to do the indoor rides while waiting for the rain to let up. So we queued up for The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh in Fantasyland, and Dianne was right — I did enjoy it, not only because I’m not a thrill ride sort of person (I did go on Space Mountain that night, but of course, that isn’t even a thrill ride for normal people!), but also because it turned out to be a bookish ride!

On Reader’s Digest

I’m not really one to read periodicals, but there’s one magazine I’ve been reading for years — Reader’s Digest.

I was introduced to Reader’s Digest in third grade, because my dad had a subscription to Reader’s Digest. In fact, one of my fondest memories of my dad is related to the magazine: every time we got a new issue, we would tear into the plastic and go straight to the Word Power section, and he’d rattle off the new vocabulary words to test me on the month’s vocabulary items.

Two months to save up!

I was squealing all over the bar tonight when I finally read what I was waiting for all day — the announcement of the new Nook!

Surprise find

After checking in on our flight home from Hong Kong, I was bemoaning the fact that I was not — cue those gasps now! — able to buy any books on the trip. Nope, not one. Zilch. Our itinerary was packed, and I squeezed in some bookstores at the malls, but the selection of English titles wasn’t  that extensive; I couldn’t find any books that weren’t outrageously expensive or were not available to me here in Manila (which makes me glad about how local bookstores have improved in terms of getting the new titles in over the years).

I also did a marathon trek (loaded down with a backpack and two canvas totebags, and streets were going uphill!) from IFC mall to the bargain bookstores in the Central area in two hours (because that’s all the time my siblings gave me — unaccompanied, too, and they left me to find my way to Causeway! Harr, It’s hard to go book hunting when you’re with people with different agendas!) and I spent about ten minutes in each store. Don’t worry, though, I documented everything, and I’ll write a separate post about my book trek later.

All packed! (and a new giveaway!)

By the time you read this, I’ll probably be waiting to board my flight to Hong Kong.

As you can see, I’m all packed already. Aside from my the Hong Kong guidebook in my handcarry, I’ve severely limited myself to Newton (my Nook) and one other book. It’s so hard to transition into the fact that I already have an e-reader, because I’m so used to traveling with a small stack of books, regardless of the fact that I’m sure to buy another stack to take back home (erm, yes, on my last trip out of the country, I shelled out $100 for excess baggage, which were purely books — loot from the Popular book fair and Bras Basah Complex!)!
