MIBF highlights

a1

I can’t believe the 30th Manila International Book Fair is finally over, and that I have to count twelve whole months until the next one. I love this year’s book fair loot, and while a couple of specialty book stores sat this book fair out, I think it served well to highlight local publishers and smaller booksellers.

While I’ve been to the book fair almost every day of the event for five consecutive years, I must say that getting to share it with the readers of this blog has made this year’s book fair extra-special. I hope my posts were helpful to those attending the book fair, and to those away from Manila, I hope you got a peek into the book fair experience.

Here is one last post, with photos of other highlights of the five days of the MIBF.

Some last minute book fair tips

One last day at the book fair, and if you havent gone to SMX for this paramount event yet, there‘s still time — it’s closing at 9pm for the last day.

Now, the  last day of the book fair is a good time to go; for some it’s even the best day to catch it, as this is when the exhibitors bring out previously overlooked stock, or stock they’ve been reserving particularly for the last day, so you may see items that weren’t out on previous days.

Some exhibitors also prefer to let go of as much of their stock as they can rather than taking it all back to their warehouse, so watch out for price slashes. The last day is also when cutthroat competition sets in, especially for exhibitors carrying the same book — this year it appears to be Dan Brown’s Lost Symbol spotted in three different booths — so I am waiting to see if they’ll have a price war tomorrow (er later today).

Manila International Book Fair, Day 1.

Dead tired, and off to a live shoot in an hour (sleepless!) but I promised to do a post on the first day of the 30th Manila International Book Fair (which runs 10 am- 8pm until Sept. 20 at SMX) so here goes.

I don’t have the energy to write a lot tonight, and I haven’t really gone to all the booths yet, just a general sweep of the place, ergo the mixed bag of today’s sights.

Four more days of the book fair, I hope this post helps those who are planning to go. Happy book fair shopping!

A rough guide to the Manila International Book Fair

Three days to go until the Manila International Book Fair!  A lot of people have been asking me for tips about the Manila International Book Fair, so I decided to create this (unofficial) guide  based on what I’ve seen over recent years.

I’ve been attending the MIBF for five years running now, covering events, shopping, and just generally enjoying the flurry of bookish activity around me. And every year, the exhibitors offer something new, and there is always a different lineup of special events to look forward to.

Healthy reading (FFP August Book Discussion)

healthy

For the month of August, the Flips Flipping Pages (FFP, the book club I belong to) book discussion was all about health, moderated by our very fit Flipper Jan.

A lot of us, myself included, were apprehensive about the topic, seeing as we’re book club friends and not gym buddies, and we flex our muscles carrying stacks of books, not dumbbells.

On a personal note,  I joined the discussion because I am still trying to come to terms (haha!) with my post-college body (*sigh* those college jeans…).  All my life, I’d always been skinny, up until after a couple years at work, when genetics (ugh, the family hips) and the sedentary life of a desk worker kicked in. The discussion was very timely for me, as I wanted to explore getting into a regular fitness routine that I can do at home, and make healthier diet choices.
