Tolkien Talk

Somehow the bug in the site that has plagued me all day has been fixed by upgrading my wordpress. I hadn’t planned on getting the bug resolved today so I did not prepare a post, but since it’s the peak of summer and I can’t sleep in this sweltering heat I might as well be productive.

This post is about Tolkien; not that I’m a huge fan. I read Th e Hobbit and Lord of the Rings back in college, borrowed from the school library a few months before the first film came out. I liked the books and even read them twice, saw the movies and thought they were awesome, but never really became a hardcore fan (like some people I know!).

Anyway, I’ve got the requisite mass market (gasp) boxed set sitting high up my shelves, and a few odd trade paperbacks (of different editions, groan!), and I had a Galadriel that is now happily residing on my friend Rhett’s shelf (photo provided by Rhett).

Lately, though, I noticed I’ve been inadvertently amassing some Tolkien stuff from my book hunting haunts.

A couple of years ago, I found this magnetic postcard book with lovely art by the brothers Hildebrandt, one of whom is one of my favorite illustrators, Greg Hildebrandt:

There are 12 magnetic postcards inside, each featuring a different artwork: Rivendell, Lord of the Ringwraiths upon a Nazgul and the Lady of Rohan, The Dark Tower, The Wedding of King Aragorn (below), Bilbo at Rivendell, Old Man Willow, City of the Ringwraiths, Lady Goldberry, The Road to Minas Tirith, Saruman at Orthanc, Cirith Ungol, and Lothlorien (top photo).

Last year, I got some more LOTR bookmarks.

These ones fold out into a map of Middle-Earth and a poster of dark creatures and where they lurk:

This year, I’ve lucked out on The Hobbit finds, which suits me fine, as it’s the Tolkien I love the most.

It’s the first volume of the 80’s comic adaptation by Charles Dixon and illustrated by David Wenzel.

The first volume ends when Bilbo finds the ring and Gollum appears.

This week I found an illustrated copy of The Hobbit, featuring the art of Michael Hague — also one of my favorite illustrators!

Lovely eh?

I think I’ll go read The Hobbit again this year!

  1. Sad to say, I only have the bookmarks. :(

And I HATE you for this post! You just made an envious person out me.

    Ahahaha! Just joking :D

  2. I love your Tolkien stuff! I am a fan but I never would’ve thought of collecting the stuff that you just showed off (yes, this is showing off!). Congrats on the wonderful finds! :)

    1. Hee hee. I do like showing off my collections on this site!

If I find any more of these, I’ll host a giveaway here

  3. Yey! I’m glad you’re back! :-)

The reason I became a regular visitor of your site is because you had posts about books I love (Sige na nga, series. It was the Harry Potter post that lured me in! Hehe) Now you have LOTR as well!!!

Your blog is one of my sources for books to read. So thank you very much for introducing the Hunger Games to me and I look forward to more of your posts! :-D

    1. Hi Chipitita! Thank you :) Tickled pink with your comment — I do enjoy sharing my passion for books with you guys

  4. very lovely indeed!!! i’ll read the hobbit again as many times as i can before the movie comes out! Silmarillion is also a treasure!

    1. Oh, yeah, the movie is coming out. I should reread The Hobbit soon.

      Haven’t read Silmarillion — it’s intimidating!

  5. Hi! I’ve read all LOTR books including The Hobbit which is my favorite as well but like you, I loved it but never became a devoted fan. I was more obsessed with Harry Potter. I remember having a couple of HP vs LOTR debates with a friend who is a hardcore Tolkien fan. :) I’m pretty excited about The Hobbit Movie though!

  6. Hi hi, does anybody have any clue how much the post cards would be worth? I have a set that’s been sitting around for many years and I’m not the worlds biggest Tolkien fan. The Hobbit is my favourite kids book but I have much preferred adult authors. This post was the only one I could find pertaining to the post cards on google.
