My cousin Dianne and I hadn’t been planning on another Harry Potter party so soon after the last one, and we wanted to focus on reading Harry Potter and the Cursed Child when it was released earlier this year. We think we’re just about done doing the run-of-the-mill Hogwarts-style Potter party (after having done it so many times, I guess?), but we couldn’t resist a Fantastic Beasts party in anticipation of the upcoming film, so we reserved it for Halloween this year.
We weren’t fans of the original movie franchise (and even stopped watching the films at some point), but I think we’re more open to Fantastic Beasts simply because we have no existing head canon for it. It just sucks that we’ll be in different cities when the film finally hits the big screen next week, but we’ll surely be messaging back and forth about the film when both of us finally get to watch it.

July 31 marks the birthdays of both Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling, and it has always been a significant date for my cousin Dianne and I because the Harry Potter books have been such a huge part of our lives. This year, on July 31st, we celebrated over fifteen years of fandom with a redux of Harry Birthday!
We had gone back and forth on the idea of another Harry Birthday party for months now. For one, in the past decade and a half, I think we’ve already done at least half a dozen Harry Potter parties, among other crazy things for the love of Harry Potter. Also, for a while the party didn’t even seem like a possibility. July had been an incredibly busy month, with my involvement in the NCBD activities, and my cousin had just moved across the country (read: separation anxiety like I’d never known before). But because it’s Harry’s 35th birthday and JKR’s 50th, we thought the time was ripe for another Harry Birthday.

I’m totally swamped with work, but it’s the eve of Harry Potter’s birthday, and seven years since Deathly Hallows was released (aha, and it’s nearly Thursday) so I’m celebrating with a trip down memory lane: how we rang in the final installment of Harry Potter, unearthed from an old cd of photos that luckily outlived Multiply.

Today is July 31st in our time zone, and it’s that time of the year again: Harry Potter’s birthday. In HP chronology, Harry is age 31 this year (his birthdate is 1980), five years before the epilogue at the end of Deathly Hallows (2026). For the sake of the people who haven’t read the series yet, or haven’t gotten to DH yet, I will spare the details that we can logically infer based on this timeline. For fellow HP fans, let’s just count back, shall we? :)
Today is also the birthday of JK Rowling, who turns 45 this year. Happy Birthday to the wonderful writer who created a magical universe for legions of readers all over the world.

Last weekend, I was feeling bad about finally taking down my Harry Potter Christmas tree when a friend was trying to console me by saying there would be other Harry Potter holidays. I happened to glance at the calendar and realized Severus Snape’s birthday (b. Jan 9, 1960) was coming up, and quickly asked my HP partner in crime, Dianne, what we were doing to celebrate his birthday this year.
The two of us normally go out to dinner and drink to Severus Snape, but we wondered if we could pull off a small party this year. Luckily, our favorite weekend hangout, Libreria Bookstore in Cubao X, graciously agreed to host us, and with under a week to pull things together, we made plans for Snapeday.
