Reading Next

My Tuesday night habit, before heading to Murphy’s for weekly Quiz Night, is book hunting. Tonight I happened to be browsing at National Book Store Greenbelt, and I thought I’d already scored my bounty — a spanking new trade paperback copy of Savage Detectives by Roberto BolaƱo, marked down to from P629 to P150 — so I was headed over the counter when something caught my eye a few tables down.

I swear, it was as if a heavenly beacon was lighting the way for me! I squinted, did a double take, then squealed, dodging two elderly women picking out cookbooks in my haste to get my hands on this:

The sixth Thursday Next novel: Jasper Fforde’s One of Our Thursdays is Missing!

I couldn’t resist tearing open the cellophane wrapper once I was outside the store. And I’ve read a few pages already, and it’s looking pretty darn awesome! Squee!

Here’s the summary from the back of the book:

It is a time of unrest in the BookWorld. Only the diplomatic skills of ace literary detective Thursday Next can avert a devastating genre war. But a week before the peace talks, Thursday vanishes. Has she simply returned home to the RealWorld or is this something more sinister? All is not yet lost. Living at the quiet end of speculative fiction is the written Thursday Next, eager to prove herself worth of her illustrious namesake. The written Thursday is soon hot on the trail of her factual alter-ego, and quickly stumbles upon a plot so fiendish that it threatens the very BookWorld itself.

Ok, I just wanted to get that out there. In case I go missing for a few days, well, I’m just off reading the One of Our Thursdays is Missing.

  1. It’s an awesome feeling when you spot a book you’re itching to get and more so if it’s on sale. I recently got a used hardbound copy of Savage Detectives for only P70! And a used paperback of Vernon god little by DBC Pierre for P50! After spotting these books, I felt like I was going to have a seizure. :) I have yet to find a cheap copy of The Eyre Affair. If that happens, I’ll probably curl up on the floor and weep. :)

    1. Hey Tin! This Jasper Fforde wasn’t on sale, but it’s a new release and I couldn’t wait to get it, discount or no discount!

The Eyre Affair is actually not that hard to find. I always see it at bargain bookstores!

  2. Hi, Blooey! One of these days, I’ll find out what makes this series quite addicting. I’ve only read the first one, and I was disappointed by it.
