The Pinoy Book Drop: Filipino Fridays (3)

And just like that, it’s Friday again! Time for another Filipino Friday, and this week it’s the Pinoy Book Drop.

Basically, the instructions were to leave books for another reader to find, and I’ve dropped five books this week.

Filipino Fright

With the two long weekends coming up, I’ve been lining up my Halloween reads to count down to the end of this frightful month, when I can finally read without interruptions.

I’ll start you off with a couple new offerings that come right in time for the season, Tahanan Books’ not-so-scary Ma-Me-Mi-Mumu! by Jomike Tejido, and All & Sundry’s hair-raising Kaba: 50 Maikling Kuwento ng Kababalaghan at Katatakutan!!! by Yvette Tan, illustrated by Nelz Yumul.

Doodle Bug

Stress has been at an all-time high in the past four weeks or so, as event after event (after event!) just kept on coming and I was up to my eyeballs in work. Three little books have been my constant companion during this time: Sachiko Umoto’s Illustration School series, which I picked up during the last MIBF.

I initially picked up these books because they’re adorable — who can resist covers like these? And I felt like I need an art refresher course, as this stubbornly dry spell in my artwork has refused to budge. But I’ve always been a doodler, and doodling calms me down especially when stress is at its peak. I find that working with my hands keeps me from getting too agitated, or from screaming (at certain people) in frustration.

Sachiko Umoto is a popular Japanese artist, and her Illustration School series: “Let’s Draw Plants and Small Creatures,” “Let’s Draw Cute Animals,” and “Let’s Draw Happy People” are step-by-step guides to cute (kawaii!) illustrations. The instructions are simple and work for various skill levels, and the pages are textured nicely for pencil drawing. I’ve been having a lot of fun with the books ever since I got them!

Kids and Books: Filipino Fridays (2)

Here’s one buzzer beater. The way this month is going, I seem to be caught in a temporal loop and it’s always Filipino Friday! It’s a struggle to keep up, but nevertheless a fun way to celebrate with fellow Filipino readers.

I like today’s topic: favorite books while growing up. I started “reading” before I actually knew the words or letters — my mom loves telling people I’ve loved books since I was in diapers, babbling nonsensically while thumbing through pages, and how (being the little weirdo I was) I refused to sleep without a book to hug. Haha. (And she still wonders why my bookshelves are triple-stacked and overflowing!). I’m fortunate to have grown up in a book-reading family and to have studied in schools with excellent reading programs so there was never any lack of reading material for me growing up. There are so many childhood favorites I’ve read and re-read many times, and I’ve featured some of them on this blog already, so here is my list, linked to posts I’ve written about them.
