Never Let Me Go

It’s been a busy month for Flips Flipping Pages, with not one, not two, but three book discussions crammed within the month. Earlier this month, we Flippers met up with National Artist for Literature F. Sionil Jose to conclude last year’s Rosales Saga readalong, then two Saturdays back we had the unofficial discussion on Helene Hanff’s “84 Charing Cross Road” (which I moderated).

Last Saturday’s book discussion, my third for the month, and the official discussion slated for March, was on Kazuo Ishiguro’s “Never Let Me Go,” moderated by Flippers Haze and Sana, held at a medical facility in Pasig.

The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street

Still on the “84 Charing Cross Road” high, I had managed to convince enough of my book club friends to join me in an unofficial discussion of the book last Saturday. At Flips Flipping Pages, we normally do unofficial discussions (outside of the monthly schedule) for certain books when one person (or more) ~~needs closure~~ feels strongly about it and elects to moderate.

Of course, being the highly suggestible people we are, it’s normally not a big challenge to gather up enough people for a discussion, but considering I kept having to move it all throughout March due to scheduling conflicts, I was pleasantly surprised at the turnout (I love you Flippers!).

Best + Worst 2014

Last Saturday, we Flippers found ourselves in Angono, the art capital of the Philippines, for our book club’s annual Best and Worst discussion, a tradition we uphold every January in place of our monthly book discussion.

Best and Worst 2013

At Flips Flipping Pages, our January book discussion is automatically allotted to revealing our best and worst reads for the year, and it’s always a great way to get recommendations from other book club members.

We had our Best and Worst discussion last Saturday at the UP Center for Women’s Studies library. The center is the UP system’s hub for advancing gender, sexuality, and LGBT rights & empowerment, and its library is small but cozy and well-stocked with a growing selection of books.

Blindness (FFP March Book Discussion)

I’ve never read any Saramago, but my copy of Blindness (mooched over a year ago) has been sitting in my TBR for over a year. I knew some of my book club friends count this book as one of their favorites, and I’ve been told this particular novel is a good starting point for Saramago, but I put off reading it because I wanted a fresh reading for the scheduled book discussion (in other words, I habitually cram for the book discussions).

Flips Flipping Pages‘ selection for this month was Blindness by Jose Saramago, moderated by Peter and Gege, both big fans of the novel.
