Papercutting (the art, not the owwie) is all the rage in the local craft community, but on my trip to Beijing, I discovered the Chinese have been doing it since they invented paper in the Han dynasty.
One of my favorite purchases from the trip is this lovely papercut bookmark, which I wheedled and wheedled the seller for (while everyone else was loading up on keychains and refrigerator magnets).
And I’ve been back and forth over this, but I’ve finally decided to give away my other papercut purchase: a book of Chinese papercuts:
The book is a compilation of papercuts of the 12 birth animals in the Chinese Zodiac: the Rat, the Ox, the Tiger, the Rabbit, the Dragon, the Snake, the Horse, the Goat, the Monkey, the Chicken, the Dog, and the Pig.
Each spread contains an introduction to the birth animal (in Chinese and English) and an exquisite papercut:
The papercut is sandwiched in between a backing board and plastic film to keep it in place:
