Winter is coming…

The GeekFight Halloween Party was last Friday, and the team I play with, WAADO, had a Best in Costume record to keep (we won last year), we decided to dress up again this year.

GeekFight is a monthly (or bi-monthly, depending on which games you attend) trivia quiz on geeky topics, and we’ve been playing for over two years now. Every Halloween there is a GeekFight wherein the best team costume wins a prize. None of us in the team are pro cosplayers, although we like crafts, costume parties, and dressing up. It’s also nice having a team costume because you can all look silly together, and  GeekFight’s one of the few places geeky costumes will be a hit.

So last year, we went as characters from the films of animation company Studio Ghibli. That wasn’t exactly book-related (although I do have the film books of nearly all the movies, and some of the films are based on books), so this is the first time you’ll be seeing it (if you’re not my Facebook friend, that is):

If you don’t recognize any of us, you are missing half of your life. I’m dressed as San (“Princess Mononoke”), while my teammates are Sen (from “Spirited Away”), Sosuke (from “Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea”), Howl (from “Howl’s Moving Castle”), Totoro (and Catbus, both from “My Neighbor Totoro”), a kodama (also from “Princess Mononoke”, and No-Face (also from “Spirited Away” and who, at half-time transformed into Hayao Miyazaki!).

That was a tough act to beat, and we wanted something more elaborate (hehe) this year. Hence this year’s costume, as characters from A Song of Ice and Fire.

It’s funny how we had thought up the theme right after last year’s party, but we ended up cramming our costumes yet again, in the last couple of weeks.

I don’t know what I was thinking, hand-stitching my costume. From scratch. Took a good part of the week to finish!

There was so much to do — we had very little sleep down the finish line.

And of course, we just had to make the Iron Throne. The replica costs $30,000, which we obviously didn’t have. Hence, thanks to our teammate Pao’s engineering skills, plus an aircon box, rubber foam, duct tape, and lots of cyanoacrylate glue…

We finished the Iron Throne by 8pm the night it was due (game starts 9:30).

 TADAH.

And then we had to rush to get dressed into our costumes. We made it in the nick of time just as the game proper was about to start, and the other teams weren’t really in costume, but the collective gasp that went around the venue when we entered, Iron Throne in tow, was so much worth it.

and TADAH: Ned Stark, (beheaded) Septa Mordane, Viserys Targaryen,
Ygritte, Robert Baratheon and Renly Baratheon.
There was a six-member limit, otherwise, we’d have had more (dead) characters!

Of course we all had to take our turns on the Iron Throne (so NOT canon, hahaha!)

We didn’t win the quiz, but we did win Best in Costume again! :)

It was an EPIC night.

What are you dressing up as this Halloween

    1. Myra, when I was over there, I saw Ice (Ned Stark’s sword) at a shop at Raffles station, was sorely tempted to get it because we had THIS in the works!

    1. Individual swords were cut and fabricated out of rubber foam. Took over 10 people and a whole week to assemble it.

      1. Do you have instructions on how you made it? I’m going to attempt but could use some guidance. Thanks!

        Do you still have it?
Would you sell it or rent it?
        And where are you located?

  1. Wow, I’m totally impressed. I, and for sure others, want to make our own throne in this manner. Could u wip up a how-to for us some time? It all turned out so wonderful.
