Who’s Excited?
Who’s excited for “The Casual Vacancy,” J.K. Rowling‘s new novel? I definitely am! I’ve been waiting for this since it was announced in February!
In fact, I’ll be trooping with the Flippers tomorrow to National Book Store.
<Cue happydancingsqueesquee!>
J.K. Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy, one of the most anticipated book releases of the year, is launching tomorrow, September 27, at exactly 3 pm , across National Book Store branches in the Philippines.
J.K. Rowling is one of those authors who needs no introduction, the woman behind the biggest selling young adult series of all-time, Harry Potter, which has sold over 450 million copies worldwide (and you know I have over 100 Harry Potter books in different languages!). The Harry Potter books have also been adapted into eight blockbuster movies (that I have stopped watching in protest, because I prefer the way the books played out in my head).
The Casual Vacancy is Rowling’s first book in five (looooooong) years and is her first book aimed at an adult readership (although Harry Potter was not originally written with children in mind!). It tells the story of the little town of Pagford, which is left in shock after the death of Barry Fairbrother. Pagford, seemingly an English idyll, is a town at war. And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council triggers the biggest war the town has yet seen.
Of course, having done all sorts of crazy things in the name of Harry Potter, I will read anything J.K. Rowling puts her name on (even a washing machine manual!)… It’s interesting to see how this one turns out, if it will enthrall the grown-up readers of Harry Potter, and generally just to find out what else J.K. Rowling has up her sleeve.
And now you know what’ll be reading this weekend!

Peter Lerangis in Manila!
about 1 week ago - 3 comments
Forgive me for the unexpected hiatus. This summer has been busier than I anticipated, but there was absolutely no way I would miss Peter Lerangis in Manila! Peter Lerangis is a prolific author of over a hundred books, including three (and a quarter) books in Scholastic 39 Clues series, “The Sword Thief” (my personal favorite),…
Tahereh Mafi + Ransom Riggs in Manila!
about 2 months ago - No comments
I was scheduled to interview Tahereh Mafi (author of “Shatter Me,” “Unravel Me”) last Saturday prior to her bloggers’ forum at Powerbooks, and was delighted to find Ransom Riggs (author of “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children”), who had flown in with her, had come along to check out her events as well. When I…
Odds and Ends

I love books and everything to do with them — bookmarks, book plates, reading implements, book-related toys and accessories and other bookish ephemera. I’ve amassed a veritable loot over the holidays, thanks to some very thoughtful people. Here’s the stash: It’s always lovely when people get you things they know you’ll appreciate. And these are…

about 7 months ago - 1 comment
Sorry it’s taken me so long, the bug I caught last month seems to be on a cruel relapse. That, and a surprise in my next post! (I can’t wait to click publish on that one!) Anyway, here’s the rest of my MIBF experience, in photos. Wish you were there! This was one of the…
And the Book Fair Bandit strikes again…

I seem to have caught a bug at the MIBF — I’ve been laid up for the past week with a nasty respiratory tract infection. But no one will believe my Book Fair purchases amounted to just one post, so here it is, finally, Part 2 of my MIBF loot! These hardcovers were part of…
I am the Book Fair Bandit.

I’ve been looting, as usual. People seem to enjoy finding out what books I’ve been picking up at the Book Fair, so at the risk of exposing my book-related pathological tendencies, here you go: the first of my MIBF loot. Anvil Publishing has a lot of books that I want. I bought a bagful today,…
Book Fair!

While waiting for the 33rd Manila International Book Fair to open for Day 2, here are some photos from yesterday’s opening. My day was mostly occupied by Carlos Celdran’s tour of the MIBF, and the opening ceremonies. Renowned Manila tour guide Carlos Celdran is one of the MIBF Bookworms, the official ambassadors of the…
One day to go: Manila International Book Fair!

I can’t believe it’s only one more day til the 33rd Manila International Book Fair! The MIBF has been a permanent fixture in my calendar for the past seven years, but my first MIBF was actually way back in 1993. I was in third grade on a field trip with the Reading Club (and I…
Potted Potter Manila
about 8 months ago - 4 comments
I was hemming and hawing over watching Potted Potter since the Manila run was first announced; there are so many theatre shows this year and it’s so hard to choose which ones to watch! Last Thursday, however, it was late afternoon when my cousin Dianne and I came across Ticketworld’s Last Minute Tickets promo and…

I’m not yet done. True, the hype is distracting. I’ve been avoiding reading all the reviews and waiting for the noise to die down. I’m about 60 pages in. Amused so far.
