I am the Book Fair Bandit.

I’ve been looting, as usual.

People seem to enjoy finding out what books I’ve been picking up at the Book Fair, so at the risk of exposing my book-related pathological tendencies, here you go: the first of my MIBF loot.

One day to go: Manila International Book Fair!

I can’t believe it’s only one more day til the 33rd Manila International Book Fair!

The MIBF has been a permanent fixture in my calendar for the past seven years, but my first MIBF was actually way back in 1993. I was in third grade on a field trip with the Reading Club (and I just realized, that was the first book club I ever joined!), and I was in awe — I had never seen so many books all in one place! With fellow bookworms from the Reading Club, I went from booth to booth, figuring out what to buy with a couple of weeks’ worth of allowance. And  when our money run out, we made the rounds once more, this time to chase down the mascots, listen to a story or two, watch cartoons, and of course, to take note of books we wanted our parents to buy for us, when we begged them to go back to the book fair as soon as we got home.

I lugged home a bag of books (see, book hoarder at age 8), which included — wait for it –Sweet Valley Kids #6: Lila’s Secret and The Babysitters’ Little Sister #23: Karen’s Doll!

Ready for ReaderCon?

Life has been a whirlwind since I got back from the AFCC, as preparations for the 2nd Filipino ReaderCon (Filipino ReaderCon) were in full swing. It was all hands on deck for members of the Filipino Book Bloggers group, and it has been great to see volunteers from different book clubs banding together to make this happen.

Last year, the ReaderCon was a half-day event that coincided with the Manila International Book Fair, and this year, we’ve gotten bigger. United We Read: The 2nd Filipino ReaderCon is happening tomorrow, August 18, 2012 (Saturday), 8:00am to 6:00pm at the Filipinas Heritage Library. Registration fee is Php150, and you can pre-register for the event here. This event is held in partnership with Filipinas Heritage Library (FHL) and National Book Development Board (NBDB), and sponsored by Scholastic, Lampara Books, McDonald’s, Flipreads, Anvil Publishing, Hachette Philippines, Amici Philippines, OMF Literature and Adarna House.

So I’ve been on the committee for the 1st Filipino Readers’ Choice Awards (with Tarie and Tina) and while it was a tremendous undertaking, we were overwhelmed by the response we received. Reading through the nominations, tallying up over 2500 votes, and watching the judges deliberate over the finalists has been an amazing experience. We’re finally awarding the Readers’ Choice Awards tomorrow at the ReaderCon, and we’ve definitely learned a lot to make the awards bigger and better next year.
