Reliving Rizal

In the spirit of Jose Rizal’s birthday, here’s a bit of a flashback to December, when our book club Flips Flipping Pages celebrated its annual Christmas/ year-end party with a Noli Me Tangere theme.

We Flippers just got back from our annual “summer” outing this weekend, and I’m feeling nostalgic as a lot of our favorite FFP memories resurfaced at various points of the trip. The book club hits the six-year mark in a few months, and having been a member for just as long, it’s nothing short of an amazing experience.

Based on my past reportage of Flipper parties, you’ve probably guessed how much we love parties (and bookish themes! and food! and costumes!). But there are quite a few Rizal enthusiasts in the group, so the Noli theme was embraced with much fanfare.

Here’s a recap of the festivities, in lovely photos by Flipper photographer extraordinaire Rhett de Jesus.

So the Flippers started arriving, and nobody was owning up to their bookish alter ego, as part of the activities was a guessing game of who could name the most characters in the party. The road to Reading Rampage (Part I)

Several weeks’ worth of hard work paid off for us in the organizing committee, as last Saturday, Flips  Flipping Pages celebrated its fourth annual Christmas party, entitled “Reading Rampage: A Bookish Ball,” which we celebrated at Powerbooks Greenbelt.

The Christmas party is the biggest event for the Flippers in the calendar year, and I can’t believe it’s our 4th Christmas together already, and our 5th year as a book club. It seems like it was only yesterday when a bunch of us, with some trepidation, agreed to meet at a secondhand bookstore not knowing what sort of sunlight-deprived oddballs we’d run into.

Flips Flipping Pages Bloody Prom Night 2010

When we were brainstorming for the Flips Flipping Pages 2010 Christmas party, we couldn’t help but look back at last year’s heinous murder mystery Christmas party, and we were thinking about how we could top that. Not easy, when we had a Flippers “dying,” a full-blown investigation, an orchestrated blackout, and some more casualties last year.

I don’t remember how we got to the concept of prom, but let me just say, I wasn’t thrilled — prom was an unpleasant experience and so was the grad ball that followed the year after.
