Giveaway: Sign Language Vintage Alphabet Stamps

I can never go into a bookstore and come out empty-handed. Even when I challenge myself to hold off on buying books, the stationery junkie that I am can’t help wandering in the supply aisles and I end up spending a small fortune on stuff I tell myself I’ll eventually find use for. Just the other day I got myself a binding machine, but I’m getting ahead of myself; that’s another story! Haha.

Anyway, last month, I was over at one of my regular bargain bookstore haunts and found this:

The Chronicle Books Vintage Alphabet Stamps in sign language!

The back of the box says:

Vintage Alphabet Stamps celebrates historical typefaces that hark back to the days when type was carved out of wood, cast in lead, and set by hand. This stamp kit, from the eccentric collection of Redstone Press, contains all the letters of a rare and unusual nineteenth-century typeface, modeled after the sign language alphabet. Add flair to letters, art, and more with Vintage Alphabet Stamps.

The set contains 28 foam-backed rubber stamps (A-Z, the sign for “&” and “I Love You”), a pamphlet explaining the sign language, an ink pad, and a cleaning sponge inside a translucent plastic box. Valued at $16.95 (Chronicle Books website).

I’d been keeping it stashed on my bookshelf, but tonight I decided to break open the seal and play around with it a bit. I tried it on different papers, but it really shows up best on super smooth paper — my unlined Pac-Man moleskine was just lovely for stamping!

Ok, so here’s the good news: I have three (3) of these stamp sets to give away.

Here’s how you can win one:

1. The raffle is open to all blog readers with a Philippine mailing address.

2. To enter the raffle, just comment on this post.

3. Entries will be accepted until Sunday, February 27, 6 pm, Manila time.

4. One raffle entry per email address. I will reply to your entry in the comments section to validate it, and I reserve the right to weed out suspicious entries.

5. Three winners (winning one set each) will be drawn via Random.org. Winners will be announced here within three days after the end of the entry period. Random.org screenshots will accompany the announcement of the winners.

6. An email will also be sent to the winners to request their (Philippine) mailing address. The prize will be packaged securely and sent via a local courier, unless I will be seeing the winner anytime soon (e.g. FFP book discussion, FBB meetup, quiz night, geek fight or whatnot).

The raffle officially opens as soon as this post is up.

  1. I remember having notebooks in elementary, printed at the back is this sign language. I used to have them down pat, as a means of silent communication between classmates when someone is listing down the noisy people ^^. Now, I don’t think I remember all of them correctly. But I still want these stamps! :P

  2. Uy, I know someone who will really, really like this, since she’s been studying sign language for quite some time already. Can you count my entry as one for her? I’ll tell her to drop by this page as well!

  3. Hmmm… Join ako! I’m in this ISL and ASL and BSL obsession right now. Specifically how you say in various Sign languages the word “Potato”.

    :)

    1. po-tay-toe / po-tah-toe haha! that’s interesting, i didn’t know there are other types of sign languages pala!

      thanks for joining Aji!

  4. hi sumthinblue! i’m the someone mika’s referring to who will “really, really like this, since she’s been studying sign language for quite some time already.” :) PLEASE, i have GOT to win me one of these, and i’ll tell you why.

    1. i’ll be able to put it to maximum use. i’m half a year away from getting certified as an interpreter and am seriously considering a career in policy advocacy for the Deaf & PWDs, and/or sped. this stamp pad set will make for cute visual aids;
    2. (insert shameless name-dropping here) as you know, i’m friends with mika, but we have a few other common and notable friends (or so fb tells me), namely aya, bam & mark, otherwise known as reasons #3, 4 and 5;
    6. did i say what cute visual aids the SL stamps will make? :)

so there, i rest my case. i hope i win!

  5. Me too! If I don’t win (and this is a raffle after all, so the chances are one in however many have joined) – will you tell me where to buy a set? My still non-verbal son will love to use these, and they will help him communicate without speech. A wonderful, wonderful thing to have! (Along with washable stamp pads, of course, hehe)

    1. Hello Iya! Got them at MCS Booksale in January, but last Sunday I didn’t see any more sets. Marie bought some for her mom too, I don’t know if she has extras left.

  6. PS (no need to approve this one, I’m just too lazy to open another window to email you) –

Please ask Abby if she can send me her contact details? In case she wants to go the SPED route, I’d love for her to work with Alonso!

Also, do you want the following hardcovers?
The Sealed Letter – Emma Donoghue (from Booksale, like new)
Chore Whore – Heather Howard (also from Booksale, some wear on dustjacket, but it’s a signed copy)

    — I didn’t love either, and don’t have room for them, as usual. Don’t want to put them in my bookmooch inventory yet as I prefer not to send hardcovers abroad!

Thank you, dear Blooey! Hope to see you soon :)

    1. I have the Sealed Letter na. Am on a book acquisition fast (or so I tell myself) so I’ll pass on the other book first.

See you soon, too, Iya! :) And will pass the message along to Abby

    1. Hi Kuya Robert! Haha, I sniffed them out at a Book Sale outlet (MCS) among the non-book odds and ends.

I will try to go back and see if there are more in stock. Thanks for joining the giveaway!
