More MIBF Loot

Aieee!!! I thought the past couple of days were already a rampage, but I came home with a huge haul today; bought more books than I could carry!

I was waiting for some guests to arrive, and they were delayed ’til the evening so I had a little more time to shop. And then Dianne returned and we ended up splurging again!

Before that, I promised to show you the stationery I got at Tahanan. Here you go:

Pretty notebooks (and pretty on the inside, too), 2/P80; a Pinoy Pose Pad, P60;
and “Quote ang Quote” memo pad, P29.

I want to get Elbert Or’s (my college classmate!) new book, I Am Herewith Enclose — I know he has a signing/drawing session tomorrow, 2-5 pm at Tahanan, so I plan to catch it. And maybe get a drawing done.

Our main target for the day was to get the Almanac of the Uncanny book that our Geek Fight team mate Treah got the night before. We were envious, haha, and A-Z Direct had this 2-for-P500 and 5-for-P1000 deal going for the Reader’s Digest books.

I dropped by the booth as soon as I got there in the morning to find it, and I immediately availed the P500 promo.

original price, P599

To my delight, I found out that I could get it with a set of Puzzle Masters books — they’re those old school puzzle books like the Usborne Puzzle Adventures Dianne and I love!

A set of four, originally priced P600

Can I say I love that their books come in boxes? They make the books seem even more special, and it’s such a wonderful experience to open these boxes, they release that heady, new book-ish smell when you open them! Adding built-in handles to the box would hit it out of the ballpark.

I also got a free lanyard and magazine for liking their page on Facebook.

I was pretty much busy at work for the rest of the day. Dianne got there around six — I think she couldn’t stand that I posted about buying the books on our FB group. She wanted to get the same books (I swear, we feed off each other’s compulsions) and then we found another book we both wanted, so I split with her on one book for the P1000 deal, and she just had to add another to complete it.

Interesting, don’t you think?

Factoring in my earlier purchase, that came to about P200+ per book — awesome, eh? It’s great to split deals like this with other people as it comes out cheaper that way.

So I had another hour before the guests I was accompanying were due to arrive, so, naturally, it was bargain bin time at NBS again. And yes, due to my diligent lurking around the unopened boxes (I was not the only one. it was like vultures circling a dying animal. Of course I have plenty of practice, try book hunting with the Flippers some time!) and lightning-fast reflexes (only applicable to when I snatch up books, hopeless elsewhere), I found these treasures:

lovely illustrations

Skarmeta’s super hard to find. I loved Burning Patience!

One novel ten authors seems like a good deal. And love the cover!

I’ve always been intrigued by this series.

I didn’t notice it’s volume 2. Hopefully it stands well enough alone.

Marvel comic + classic book = wow!

Lois Lowry, yay!

so cute!

The NBS bargain bins keep getting emptied and restocked; it’s enough to drive one crazy! But at least the shelf stockers don’t mind getting stalked, hahaha. The crowd’s getting thicker, though, so it’ll be more challenging (Heck, I need the challenge, I’m buying too many books!) over the weekend.

Everyone’s bringing out the good stuff this weekend for the last two days of the fair, so I expect there’ll be more book shopping on my end. Will get my stash of books from the local publishers over the weekend, too.

Are you going to the MIBF this weekend? See you there!

  1. THe Willoughbys!! Is that a hardcover? I picked up a paperback recently on sale. It’s not my favorite Lowry, has a strong Lemony Snicket flavor, but still glad to have it on on my shelf.

Speaking of finds, I chanced upon The London Eye Mystery in an NBS bargain bin yesterday, and you know I’ve been wanting that book. But not at the Book Fair – must go back, if I can! I’m not a good vulture though :(

    1. Yes, hardcover. Like you, anything Lois Lowry, I will get. I found a lovely old hardcover of her Us and Uncle Fraud.

Hope you got a good haul when you went back to the MIBF.

  2. I have a copy of The Almanac of the Uncanny. There are local stories in there, too. I haven’t finished reading all of the stories, but I’ll return to it come Halloween. Booo. ;)

By the way, I saw you at the Filipino Reader Con, but was too shy to say hi. :D

    1. The book looked so interesting nga so I got it. Great for reading with a booklight under a blanket, I’m afraid!

Oh, Monique, I didn’t know you were there! Next time, I want to get to know you!!!
