Match Me if You Can

I remember reading a couple of Susan Elizabeth Phillips romances back in high school (historical, I don’t remember which), but I’ve never read any of her contemporary novels. I’ve been reading positive reviews about them, though, so when I spotted a hardcover copy of Match Me If You Can (#144 for 2009!) at a roving book sale last year, I decided to get it so I could check it out.

My plans to read this book got derailed when one of my sisters (the one based in Singapore) found the book on my shelf while she was on vacation here and took it with her, so I didn’t see it for a year or so until I reclaimed it when I visited her there a few weeks ago.

Match Me If You Can is a romantic comedy about a kooky matchmaker, Annabelle Granger, who is trying to find the perfect match for “The Python,” the wealthy, not to mention drop-dead gorgeous, sports agent Heath Champion.

Annabelle needs to make a match for Heath to save her flailing matchmaking business, “Perfect for You,” which she inherited from her grandmother. Problem is, Heath has also signed on with the glamorous socialite Portia Powers’ matchmaking agency, Power Matches.

Annabelle is determined to beat Portia at finding the perfect match for Heath… and you all can probably guess how that turns out.

I don’t read romances often, but when I do, I prefer the plot to be straightforward, a light and fluffy read that doesn’t aspire to be the world’s greatest novel. I read romances to be entertained, and to restore my faith in happily ever after (hahaha!), not for mental acrobatics.

I was reading aimlessly for a bit, as it was one of those sporty novels (which bore me) with lots of jocks and locker room talk in them (give me the geeks anytime!) and it took awhile for the story to get into the groove, but when it did, it was pretty much enjoyable.

I didn’t have a lot of expectations starting this book, and I must say the witty banter was an added bonus, and the humor was a pleasant surprise.

The book was perfect for a red-eye flight home from our Singapore trip (at least until my sister snapped at me to go to sleep and turn out the light *grumble*). It had been a very long day, and it was great to just kick back with this book.
