ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Lauren Kate is an American author of young adult fiction. Lauren grew up in Dallas, went to school in Atlanta, and started writing in New York. Her books include The Betrayal of Natalie Hargrove and Fallen, which reached #3 on The New York Times Best Seller List for children’s chapter books on January 8, 2010. As of Wednesday, June 23, 2010, Fallen had spent 6 months and two weeks on the List.

Lauren Kate’s new book Torment, the sequel to Fallen, was released on 28 September 2010. It debuted at #1 on the New York Times Bestseller List and, as of October 17, remained at #1. The paperback edition of Fallen debuted at #1 on the List, as well. The third book in the Fallen series–entitled Passion–is due to be released in Summer 2011.

ABOUT THE BOOKS

FALLEN

Beautiful Lucinda (Luce) Price is banished from everything she knows after a mysterious fire leaves her friend Trevor dead and Luce shouldering the blame. She is forced to board at a decrepit reform school where students are under the constant watch of cameras and must go without cellphones or Internet access. Grief-stricken by Trevor’s death and horrified by her new surroundings, Luce is also plagued by sinister, terrifying shadows that appear wherever she goes.

The remote gothic setting provides the standard backdrop for the crux of the story, first in a planned series—the romantic feelings Luce develops for the elusive, unpredictable, and rather unlikable Daniel. Aside from the evil shadows, the plot can be summed up with a single word: pining. Luce longs for Daniel in various ways—dreaming of him, digging up information, trying to talk to him, experiencing rejection, then trying again.

Some readers will pine right alongside Luce, but others may feel that Kate spends too much time on unrequited love and too little on forward movement in Luce’s relationship with Daniel and the mystery of what, exactly, Daniel is.

TORMENT

In Kate’s sequel to Fallen, fallen angel Daniel has negotiated an 18-day truce with demonic Cam, during which time they will keep his one true love, 17-year-old Luce, safe from the Outcasts, “spineless, waffling angels, shunned by both Heaven and Hell,” who are after her.

Daniel sends Luce to Shoreline, a Northern California prep school for angel-descended Nephilim. The change is stressful for her because she is there alone and because she is seen as a “legendary freak” by some students for her famous doomed relationship with Daniel, which has unfolded tragically over several lifetimes. Uncovering details from her past lives and meeting charmingly normal Miles, Luce begins to have doubts about Daniel.

Equal parts romance and thriller, this sequel can be both schmaltzy (“There was no darkness, no more cold, just the lovely sensation of being bathed in his violet glow. Even the rush of the ocean was canceled out by a soft hum, the energy Daniel carried in his body”) and frequently suspenseful. The open-ended finale paves the way for a third book.

****

I haven’t read any of Lauren Kate’s books (you know I’m not exactly a fan of the paranormal genre) but the Fallen event makes me curious enough to to try it out. I’ll be interviewing Lauren Kate on Saturday so I’m starting Fallen tonight, but I’m actually more interested on her thoughts about the paranormal YA genre , reading, and her journey towards becoming a bestselling writer.

Will post the interview here over the weekend.
