Bookish Crafts

I’m in the middle of composing some reviews at the moment, but here’s something I want to share with you in the meantime: bookish crafts!

I’ve been poking around my crafts supplies trying to get some creative juices running. I’m still in that illustration funk (for over a year now, sadface), but crafting is getting to be therapeutic of late.

I know it looks like a fifth grade craft project, but here’s my first attempt at using paper clay.

Haha! I need more practice with this. Paper clay is stickier than I expected; it’s somewhat of a cross between modelling clay and papier mache — gloopy and very very messy! But I like that it air-dries to a nice smooth surface for painting. I have another pack of the stuff, but I need more supplies (here I go again): carving tools (gosh, I was in high school when I last used these!) and smaller brushes for the paintwork (curse those tiny, hard-to-reach corners!).

I’ve been repurposing some old bargain bin finds (mostly foreign language cast-offs) into bookmarks, too — you might have seen the Tintin bookmarks I made last Christmas.  I made a new batch from other books, and I’ve got a bunch of them selling at Libreria book store, but I’m keeping these for myself — Curious George, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, and my favorite — Madeline!

I’ll be rooting around in bargain bins again so I can make more bookmarks!

    1. :) Hehe, me naman I’ll use everything except a bookmark to mark books — receipts, clothes tags, tissue… I always lose my nice bookmarks so I keep the ones in my collection are in a pretty box. Ironic, huh?

  1. Blooey, thank you! You are the sweetest. And I got some cheap Beatrix Potter books that I want to turn into gift cards for when my son gives birthday gifts. I’m not quite sure how though – my plan and execution are two totally different things (I can direct but not create :( ). The books are smaller than postcard size but you can turn them into mini bookmarks, I suppose. Pretty art too, diba, the watercolors? Will grab one for you the next time I see them.

    1. Yeah, I want to do Beatrix Potter too! I have a nursery frieze kit that I’m meaning to turn into bookmarks :)

    1. I bought this at Saizen (P85). Lately I’ve seen a couple brands na sa National, I’m not sure lang how much. Will get my next stash sa NBS so I can compare.

    1. Will save some Madeline for you. No more from The True Story of the Three Little Pigs.

They’re made from actual books, mostly bargain copies and foreign language editions.
