Book Bazaar Loot!

Last week I talked about how much I was looking forward to the National Book Store Christmas Book Bazaar and by the time Nov. 19th rolled around, I was all stoked to go book hunting. But alas, I got caught in traffic coming from the other side of the metro, got caught in more traffic on the way to the book bazaar, and by the time I got there, it was 45 minutes ’til closing time and I must say, I do not shop well under pressure!

So I had to go back. Saturday was out of the question, as my day was packed with the Lumina Pandit Tour (yes, I know, I owe you that post — I’m wading through hundreds of photos!) and the End of the Affair discussion, so on Sunday, after my morning visit to Iya’s place to check out her advent calendars (have you seen them? get one at Tie Me Up Buttercup before December 1!), she dropped me off at the book bazaar and I happily dug in!

Here are some surreptitiously taken photos of the bazaar (and besides, I was too busy to take photos!):

And here’s the loot!

vintage desktop flipbooks — for “feisty foodies”

Newbery winners Number the Stars (I’m upgrading my beat-up copy)
and Bridge to Terabithia (haven’t read it!)

hardcover Clamp manga

(this matches my Christian Dior Little Dictionary of Fashion)

yay for Knuffle Bunny!

A Stopover in Venice and The Queen’s Gambit

Two Polly Horvath books

Asian reads: Stealing Buddha’s Dinner and Hardboiled & Hardluck

because I loved the movie so much!

Trivia!

A Field Guide to Getting Lost — it looked so interesting!

picture books!

(I’ve got book 1)

I’ve always wanted to try Joe Hill!

and a book on craft framing.

I bought some more, but I’m giving them as gifts to certain people who are regular readers so I’m not going to spoil it for them… All in all over a couple dozen books panned out to about P1000. And there were a lot more books I wanted too; I just restrained myself from buying more than I could physically carry. I saw some Lonely Planet photography books for P150 each, a hardcover copy of The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Prisoner’s Dilemma for P250; The Underneath and Savvy for P200 each; an illustrated Tolkien Encyclopedia for P150, and a Classic Winnie the Pooh pop-up for P300! And tons of full-color cookbooks for P100-P150!

I was skulking around the unopened boxes in the hopes I’d see them get opened, but I had to go home after a while; I was adding books to my pile every passing minute and it was wreaking havoc on my sanity! But I was actually being good, because I told myself I wouldn’t get as many books as I did two years ago, wherein a got a ridiculous number of books I haven’t even made a dent on until now! I think I’ve been managing it quite well, as I weeded out a lot on the way to the cashier.

The good books go pretty fast, though; some of the books I got (or hesitated getting) on my first trip weren’t there anymore on my second visit! The thought of missing out on a good buy in the past two days I haven’t been to the bazaar is enough to drive me crazy so I’m trying hard not to think about it (haha!). I think I’ll have to go back one last time before the bazaar is over (last day on the 29th!), though, just for my peace of mind… but oh my poor wallet!

Better not speak too soon about being good… the 29th’s a holiday! Who wants to come with? :D

  1. I got 5 copies of Give the Bitch her Chocolate and I’m planning to give them as gifts. :) I also got several copies of another humor book, I forgot the title.

    Congrats on your loot!

    1. I’m planning to give away the ones I got as gifts too… I actually already gave away one :D

That explains why there weren’t any more copies on Sunday! :)

Congrats to us on our loot!

    1. Will go in the morning most likely.

Going to the bazaar in the evening doesn’t pay off, I learned the first day I went — all the good books were already taken!

  3. Much as I’d love to go, braving crowds isn’t advised for me anymore as my tummy is pretty swollen at this time and I might give birth soon. The MIBF was my last opportunity to splurge on books, so I’m just going to live vicariously through you. :)

    And what a loot! :)

  4. So lucky you got Joe Hill’s 20th Century Ghosts! Ive been hunting for that book since. So bad wasn’t able to go to the nook bazaar.

Now, what wouldn’t I let go just for a copy of that…
    Hmm.. . :)
